Novavax (age 12+) – Update as of July 19, 2022: The Centers for Disease Control and Administration (CDC) has authorized the
Novavax COVID-19 vaccine, adjuvanted for use in individuals aged 18 years and older. The protein
subunit Novavax vaccine is administered intramuscularly as a primary series of two doses (0.5 mL each)
3-8 weeks apart.
 On August 22, 2022, the CDC lowered the age authorization of Novavax to 12 years of
age
. Novavax is now the fourth COVID-19 vaccine currently authorized in the United States under an
Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

What You Need to Know

-CDC recommends COVID-19 primary series vaccines for everyone ages 6 months and older, and COVID-19 boosters for everyone eligible ages 5 years and older.

-Getting a COVID-19 vaccine after you recover from COVID-19 infection provides added protection against COVID-19.

-People who are moderately or severely immunocompromised have different recommendations for COVID-19 vaccines, including boosters.

-The following COVID-19 vaccine and booster recommendations may be updated as CDC continues to monitor the latest data.

The Updated COVID-19 Bivalent booster doses are now available

The Bivalent boosters for Moderna and Pfizer target the original strain of COVID plus the omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5.

Monovalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccines are NO LONGER authorized for use as boosters in people ages 12 years and older.

Important points below:

-Individuals 18 years of age and older are eligible for a single booster dose of the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine, Bivalent if it has been at least two months since they have completed primary vaccination or have received the most recent booster dose with any authorized or approved monovalent COVID-19 vaccine.

-Individuals 12 years of age and older are eligible for a single booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine, Bivalent if it has been at least two months since they have completed primary vaccination or have received the most recent booster dose with any authorized or approved monovalent COVID-19 vaccine.

Monovalent mRNA Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine remains authorized for use as boosters in children age 5 through 11 and all primary series vaccinations.

COVID-19 Vaccine for Kids

Get a COVID-19 vaccine for your child as soon as you can. 

-COVID-19 vaccines are safe, effective, and free.

-COVID-19 vaccines have undergone – and will continue to undergo – the most intensive safety monitoring in U.S. history.

-Vaccinating children will help protect them from getting COVID-19 and reduce their risk of severe disease, hospitalizations, or developing long-term COVID-19 complications.

-COVID-19 cases in children can result in hospitalizations, deaths, MIS-C (inflammatory syndromes) and long-term complications, such as “long COVID,” in which symptoms can linger for months.

-According to the CDC, the spread of the Delta variant resulted in a surge of COVID-19 cases in children throughout the summer.

-Similar to what was seen in adult vaccine trials, the vaccine was nearly 91 percent effective in preventing COVID-19 among children aged 5-11 years in vaccine trials.

-In clinical trials, vaccine side effects were mild, self-limiting, and similar to those seen in adults and with other vaccines recommended for children. The most common side effect was a sore arm.

-Your child will need a second shot of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine 3 weeks after their first shot.

-Your child can’t get COVID-19 from any COVID-19 vaccine, include the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

-The vaccine cannot cause fertility issues for your child, and the vaccine cannot change their DNA.

-Your child may get a COVID-19 vaccine and other vaccines at the same visit or at separate visits without any waiting period between vaccines.

Prepare for your child’s vaccination visit.

Get tips for how to support your child before, during, and after the visit.

-Talk to your child before the visit about what to expect.

-It’s okay to ask questions. Talk to your child’s healthcare provider or a trusted licensed medical professional in your community about concerns you many have. You can also visit the dedicated resources and FAQs.

-Tell the doctor or nurse about any allergies your child may have.

-Comfort your child during the appointment.

-To prevent fainting and injuries related to fainting, your child should be seated or lying down during vaccination and for 15 minutes after the vaccine is given.

-After your child’s COVID-19 vaccination, you will be asked to stay for 15–30 minutes so your child can be observed in case they have a severe allergic reaction and need immediate treatment.
